Get ready to Bark’em Up! Play as Bullet, a C³ class (Cute Cybernetic Corgi) pup on his quest to save his owner, a brilliant scientist kidnapped by an alien race that wants to rule the galaxy.

This game takes place before the events of the first movie, when John is at his most lethal before meeting his wife Helen. There are familiar faces from the movie and new ones made just for the game.

Let’s talk gameplay. First the name of the game gives it away. You move in a hex like fashion, but not controlling John with your keyboard, instead with your mouse in a click and action button. When I first started playing this is not what I expected. When I thought about a John Wick game, I was thinking more Max Payne run, gun, some slow motion. But this game is more like a movie editing software, which isn’t a bad thing. When it works it works well, but when it doesn’t it feels like a hot mess. If you are familiar with the old SOCOM Navy Seals game, you may know what I’m talking about. You click to give a command, John does it, and if you click the wrong command (ie throw gun instead of shoot) you’re going to most likely take a lot of damage and die. There are multiple actions given to you while standing still including – Move, shoot, take down, strike, push, parry and throw gun. When these are chained together you really feel like “baba yaga”.

Until you click the wrong action, or an enemy is right in your face. Once an enemy is in your area you must dodge before they strike you or shoot you. You must keep an eye on your ammunition, health and focus in this game as well. Focus is the most important because if it goes down too much you will miss shots, fail take downs and not take cover correctly. You must keep low and refocus. Ammunition is the next thing you should worry about. You don’t get to pick up ammunition, only extra guns. Once you are out of ammunition you can throw your gun at the enemy to distract them. Health, while important, isn’t a big concern unless you get shot a lot or punched.

There are two game modes – Operator and Expedited. Operator gives you all the time in the world to decide. Expedited is on a five second shot clock, that is five seconds to decide each action. Will you wait for an enemy to pass, will you move, shoot them or take them down? I played this mode for all of about 15 minutes and I kept dying every two minutes because I wasn’t quick enough or panicked. These thinking games aren’t my strong suit; let me run around and shoot someone FPS style please. But for someone who has finished Operator mode and really wants to feel like John Wick, Expedited mode is made for you. It adds a real challenge that I feel is missing from the Operator mode, which for an experienced player would be amazing. For a noob like myself, I found it frustrating enough to blame my mouse for miss clicks.

One thing I really liked was the art style for this game. It looks like a comic book come to life, the colours (once you move over an area) light up into a variety of blacks, greys and purples depending on whether you have killed an enemy. It’s likewise very comic book in the cut scenes, the mouths don’t move and the hands are stuck together but for some reason I was happy about it. The change of slide comes in like a comic black boarder and characters don’t move just sound effects and voice acting. There isn’t a great deal of detail in some areas or many characters but often they are hidden well in shadows and blacked out areas. John is the most detailed out of all the characters, and why wouldn’t he be – he is the main character. I just feel they could have done more with the others in cut scenes and game play.

This game needs your time. You cant just play for 10 minutes and be done. You have to invest and play through the early missions which are made for you to beat easily before the game steadily becomes harder, finishing with some great boss battles. Once you have mastered the actions you really feel like John Wick. You will feel incredible, rolling into a room, taking down an enemy, shooting another, moving to cover and taking down three more enemies before they even know what’s happened.

The game is out now for Windows PC and Mac OS (via Epic Games Store), with console ports coming afterward
